APPG celebrates BBNJ update

🌊 This weekend marked a historic milestone for protecting the ocean πŸͺΈ

The Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) is now officially coming into effect, 120 days after the 60th ratification from nation states. This marks a landmark moment for the ocean after years of work from ocean sector organisations, academics, parliamentarians and diplomats – it will provide the framework to; protect the High Seas, tackle transboundary threats, and ensure marine life can thrive beyond national waters.

Our Chair of the APPG for the Ocean, Sarah Champion MP said,

β€œThis is a huge achievement for the ocean. With the UK’s BBNJ Bill passing through Parliament, our government now has an important responsibility to ratify the Agreement as soon as possible if we are to demonstrate global leadership and have the UKs voice heard in the delivery of the agreement. The hard work starts now to deliver tangible protections for the High Seas.

The BBNJ demonstrates the power of international collaboration. Developing a cross-Government UK and International Ocean Strategy presents a real opportunity to support its implementation. Grounded in science, collaboration, and long-term investment, such a strategy would provide a practical framework to turn commitments into action, close governance gaps, and secure lasting protections for marine biodiversity for today and future generations.”
